It starts with a procession leading to a large pile of wood which has been prepared in the middle of the road. The crowd cheers as this is lit. Pubs and chippies are open, traditional music plays and men in kilt dance..

By midnight, the fire is down quite a bit, and the policemen in attendance allow us to stand very close – thank God, because it`s freezing. There`s a loud speaker announcement that we will be shown life in Edinburgh/television and the crowd will cheer, shout and wave.

The last minutes of the decade are counted down via the same speaker, and shortly afterwards, the crowd will dissolve. The pubs remain open but some prefer to continue celebrating outside.

Even during wartime, this tradition remained unbroken. While a large fire was deemed too dangerous at it could catch the attention of enemy bombers, a tiny candle was placed in a cup, put onto the street, where the fire would be, set alight and celebrated.

Seit 100 Jahren gibt es im schottischen Biggar/Lankarkshire ein grosses Strassenfest zu Sylvester.

Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass das seit 100 Jahren gleich abgeht: Ein langer Fackelzug geht zu einem riesigen Scheiterhaufen, der mitten auf der Strasse errichtet worden ist. Dort angekommen werden unter grossem Jubel die Fackeln ins Holz gesteckt.

Die Kneipen und Fish-and-Chip-Shops sind geoeffnet, traditionelle Musik spielt in einer Ecke und Maenner im Kilt tanzen dazu. Ich kann mir vorstellen dass dieselbe Musik in 1910 gespielt hat und die Taenzer die gleichen Kleider trugen.

Bis Mitternacht ist das Feuer so weit herunter gebrannt dass man nah daran stehen kann, was die anwesenden Polizisten grosszuegig gestatten. Gottseidank, denn es war bitterbitterkalt.

Zwischendrin wird ueber Lautsprecher angekuendigt dass wir life nach Edinburgh/Fernsehen uebertragen werden, dann wird gejubelt, gejohlt und gewunken.

Ueber den gleichen Lautsprecher werden die letzten Minuten des Jahrzehnts herunter gezaehlt, und die Menge verduennt sich kurz darauf. Die Kneipen bleiben natuerlich auf, obgleich viele draussen weiterfeiern.

Selbst waehrend des Krieges wurde diese Tradition nicht unterbrochen. Waehrend ein riesiger Scheiterhaufen als zu gefaehrlich galt, da er feindliche Bomber haette anlocken koennen, platzierte man in diesen Jahren eine winzige Kerze in einer Tasse, stellte sie anstelle des Riesenfeuers auf die Strasse, zuendete sie an und feierte trotzdem.

Oft vernachlaessige ich die Freunde die weiter weg wohnen, und da boete sich so ein Blog doch schoen an (gerade fuer Bilder!), auch wenn ich nicht jede Woche schreibe.

Facebook ist ja nich tjedermanns Sache. Bin mir selber nicht so sicher. Ich bin drauf und benutze es weil andere es benutzen, aber ich kenne auch genuegend Leute die sich vehement gegen diese und aehnliche Networkingseiten straeuben. Alles in allem stimme ich zu dass sie ueberbewertet werden. Und man hat nicht so viel Platz wie in einem Blog.

I`ve been blogging in the past and quite fancy giving it a go again.

I`m not always that good at keeping in touch with people (particularly those who are at a geographical distance) and a blog would give them a place to log on and keep up with us all. (Even if I don`t update it on a weekly basis).

I`m aware that not everybody likes facebook. Don`t quite know myself what I think of it. I`m on it and have been using it because others are, but many of those who matter most to me fiercely resist using social networking sites. I do feel they are overrated, btw. And you cannot use as many words as you can in a blog.

Es hielt alles was es versprach und mehr. So ruhig, so schoen, so verwoehnend, so ohne alles was ich an Weihnachten nicht mag.

Wir beide wollen naechstes Jahr wieder hin!

It was he best Christmas ever, just the two of us, to Stobo Castle, which is a spa hotel in the Borders.

It`s everything it promised to be, and more. So relaxing, so pampered, so lacking everything I don`t like about Christmas.

We both so want to go back next year!

Nun ist es offiziell – der Tierarzt will dass sie 1/3 ihres Koerpergewichtes abnimmt…

As usual, I was anticipating major frictions, and I had an inkling about what those might be about:  dad found out that I had been last year and not told him. Two people divulged this on the same day. I wanted to spare his feelings, as we did not have time to see him. There was nothing nasty about us not telling him about the visit.

Of course, they asked, and as previously agreed, I firmly declined to comment. I did not want to either lie or discuss the whole thing. The topic was dropped quickly, and after two minutes of silence, the evening continued okay.

It was difficult to see my uncle who was recently told that he has only a year to live. What do you say when you say goodbye to someone who you may be seeing for the last time ever?

I`ve been looking forward to it but right now, I am not exactly savouring the thought.

My dad and wife have found out that we were there last year and did not see or tell them. Oops.
